Garage Door Rollers

What Are The Best Rollers For A Garage Door?

There are basically 4 different types of rollers that are used on garage doors . All rollers are made with steel stems with wheels at one end of roller. The difference is in the wheel itself are either plastic, steel or nylon wheels.
Plastic wheels are fitted at one end of roller stem and do not use ball bearings in their construction.
Steel wheels come 2 ways, with ball bearings and without ball bearings.
The  nylon constructed wheels are pretty much identical to a skateboard wheel or roller blade wheel. They are also made of the same nylon material and always have a ball bearing system built in. There are 2 ways these rollers come,  rollers either constructed with ball bearings the visible and need lubrication at least once a year; or the grease packed
maintenance -free sealed nylon rollers.

Rollers That Do Not Use Ball Bearings

The rollers that do not use ball bearings will deteriorate a lot faster than ones with bearings. If they are plastic than the rollers will tend to break apart when they age over the years and the plastic rolling in a steel track system will wear the plastic down and over time the wheels gets smaller and tend to pop out of the track and cause other problems with door functionality. Of course the steel rollers will not have this kind of wear. Rollers with steel wheels and no bearings built in will over time come apart from roller stem and is noticeable when the wheel looks crooked when the door is in the up position.

Nylon Rollers

In our experience the nylon sealed maintenance -free rollers with ball bearings are the best to use because of 2 reasons. First reason is the ball bearings give the roller more life and the nylon rollers roll in the steel track very quietly so in our opinion its a win-win choice.

Customers are always happy with a quieter door & less maintenance no mess…...

Can Bad Roller Cause The Garage Door To Go Off Track?

If you have one bad roller it’s possible that you have more than one bad roller and absolutely can cause a door to go off the track. The main reason to cause the door to go
off-track from one bad roller or several bad rollers is the fact that if the door does not roll up and down properly in the opener is going to have a hard time opening and closing the garage door. In other words if the garage opener cannot open the door Then it can make the cables jump off of the cable drum and this will cause the garage door to be crooked and if the garage door is crooked then the rollers are going to start to pop out. If a garage door roller is worn down so much that it has lost its radius which means the tread part of the wheel has worn down so much that it will pop out of the track because it is designed to stay in the track because of the radius that it is manufactured with.

Can Bad Rollers Affect The Garage Door Opener?

Yes, absolutely bad rollers will affect your garage door opener in many ways. When rollers have not been properly maintained and have attracted a lot of dirt and debris. When the rollers can’t roll than it makes the garage door harder to move up and down the opener will have to work harder to operate the door. This will wear motor and internal gear parts prematurely. Also bad rollers can make the door jump cables and throw the door off track and bend the opener rail because it is attached to the door.
